Trying Crossfit

by Elle, another PriorFatGirl on April 30, 2012

Have you ever heard of Crossfit? I hear people rave about it all the time, and I’ve seen some pretty convincing transformations in people I know who have done it.

I’ve looked into it myself a few times, but the price always turns me off of it. It’s definitely more than your average gym membership fees. But then last week, I was walking back to my desk from a meeting when a flyer in the hallway caught my eye…

“FREE CROSSFIT TRIAL”

Aw yeah, baby. The very best time to try something out is when it’s free. The flyer said Crossfit will bring all necessary equipment (barbells and the like) to the premises, and all you have to do is show up in sneakers and workout clothes. It’s during lunch this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I’m planning to get in all three days. When the trial is over, they’ll discuss contracts and pricing, and if I like it as much as I think I will, I just might sign up.

One not-so-fun thing I have to deal with after having lost weight is my upper arms. What was once just chubs is now loose skin that would look much better it it was firmed up by some muscle. Same with my legs. And bohiney. And, well… kind of everything. Running has been great, but it doesn’t do much for me in the way of forming and building muscles. Not for my upper body anyway.

What do you think of Crossfit? Have you done it? Do you think it’s worth the $$$?

I’ve heard amazing things about crossfit though I haven’t done it myself. It’s apparently great for people who hate being bored working out because it’s always something new and challenging.

I don’t mind repeating my workouts and doing things on my own so I’ve never been motivated to join but I’ve been encouraging my bf to sign up :)

Good luck with the trial and I can’t wait to see how it went!

I just started going to a crossfit gym about 8 weeks ago. It is very tough and some days you just can’t believe that you will survive the workouts, but it is amazing and super fun as well! Everyone is supportive and inspiring, plus I have seen some great results already in my shoulders and arms (must be all of those pushups and pullups!). Give it a try!

Hi!
I actually just started CrossFit and so far, I’m loving it!!!

The community of support you will get is amazing. Everyone is so welcoming & encouraging.

The workouts are HARD! I can hardly finish them and I have to modify everything. There is so much to learn about form and proper technique. I’m trying to be patient and not be too hard on myself. Physically, I’ve done things in the last 2 weeks that I never dreamed I would do. And I feel like a total bad ass for it.

It is a little pricey, but the classes are very small and you get lots of individualized attention, especially while you are learning. So to me, it’s worth it. Can’t wait to read how you like it!! Good luck with your first WOD!

I have a groupon for 5 free crossfit sessions, I’m so nervous to try it! I have looked up WODs online and I don’t think I can do anything, ha ha. I have a friend who is a devotee but he’s an insane athlete. I have one month left before my groupon expires… please let me know if I will survive or not!

I’m 3 weeks into Cross Fit and LOVING it!! It’s high intensity for short periods and it leaves everyone (even the super fit people) exhausted! It’s all done at your level of fitness so even though I struggle and can’t do as many reps as everyone, it’s all about your own individual max out! In 3 weeks my endurance has TOTALLY improved. Fun and motivating! Good Luck!

Oh, yay, you’re back! I found your blog last week and absolutely LOVE it! I’ve been going through your older posts, reading about what you went through when you were my size…it’s been very inspiring! :)

Curious to see how you like Crossfit. I don’t know many people who do it, but those that do are OBSESSED with it, so it has to be pretty good!

I gave Crossfit a shot last year and it wasn’t for me… too much grunting, I think? Consider seeing if The Bar Method is in your area. Love, love, LOVE it!!!!

SOOOOOOOO glad to see you back….you’ve definitely been missed in my daily blog readings!

I started CF today at my health club… it’s tough, but it is the most efficient workout you are ever going to get. In only 7, 15, sometimes 20 minutes you work harder than you ever will on your own or even just working with a personal trainer- which I have done before.

If the price turns you off (understandably- I am paying for a monthly membership to my health club and CF prices on top of that… ouch!) then something to check out is BodyRockTv. They offer daily workouts (with modifications for those who are new!) that are very CF oriented. If you’re motivated enough to do it at home, its a great option.

Good luck and expect to get completely worked! (In the best way possible)

I’m a regular reader of your blog but never commented. This brought me out of hiding! I’ve been doing Crossfit for 3 weeks now and am absolutely head over heels in love. It’s challenging, the WOD’s sometimes seem insane, and while I’m doing it I’m wondering why the heck I’m paying (a lot) of money to torture myself. And then after I feel like a total badass and can’t wait till the next class! It’s totally worth the money and it will whip you into serious shape fast. DO IT DO IT DO IT! Can’t wait to read your thoughts after this week!

I have been crossfitting for 6 months and it has been completely amazing! I am 41 years old and my fitness level has never been better in my life. I am working on my first dead hand pull up which has always been a fitness goal of mine. Strength training plus the short high intensity WODs will transform your body. But perhaps the most amazing part of crossfit is the sense of community you will experience! Good luck Elle!!

Sounds exciting! You may even be trying your first workout as I write this. Good luck and can’t wait to hear all about it!

I took the plunge and joined a box in January and absolutely love it! You’ll hear a lot of people talking about how it is cult like but I really think its because you either love it or hate it. I joined because I lost all motivation to workout on my own and its great being able to just show up and have an awesome workout already made for you plus lots of motivation from the coaches and other members as well. Good luck!!

I’m scared to try crossfit. I think a free trial would be just what I need.

How have the rest of the workouts gone?

I did a Q & A on my blog and tagged a couple of you PFGs so if you have time to stop in that would be great. If not, I understand.
