Wanted: a future PriorFatGirl, mom edition!

by Jen, a priorfatgirl on March 11, 2011

Back in November, you and I had the pleasure of meeting 10 amazing individuals who all were fighting through their healthiness journey, and wanted to share their journeys with you.  After a tough vote , we welcomed Elle, a priorfatgirl and JP, a priorfatguy to the family!

What started out as a place for me to document my journey has now grown to be a full family:

Although each of us have experienced our own complex dynamics that make fighting the healthiness fight hard, there was something missing.

The one thing we don’t get, is what it’s
like for moms to fight for their healthiness journey.

In collaboration with Robin Rock, an amazing and nationally syndicated radio personality, I’m pleased to announce the search for the next priorfatgirl, mom edition! (Full podcast here.) Here’s how it’ll go:

  • Self-Nomination Deadline: Submit your self-nomination prior to FRIDAY, APRIL 1st, 2011 at 10pm CT. {See how to self-nominate & rules of self-nomination below)
  • Self-Nomination Review: Jen, a priorfatgirl, will select the top choices based on multiple criteria – those selected will move onto the 2nd round. {See nomination review criteria below.}
  • PriorFatGirl Reader Voting: During the week of April 11th, Jen, a priorfatgirl, will post the top choices and will allow for priorfatgirl readers to vote on who the next priorfatgirl will be.

How to Self-Nominate:

Send a 700-1,000 word email to jen@priorfatgirl.com describing why you want to join the PriorFatGirl family. Also include a link to your blog (will not be shared during first round) and a photo of yourself. Feel free to expand on any combination of the below suggestions:

- your physical & mental healthiness goals.
- what healthiness means to you.
- how you plan to change your life, not just your diet.
- what you’ve learned from blogging & other healthiness bloggers.
- anything else about your journey you feel relevant.

Do not go over 1,000 words — Jen, a priorfatgirl has a short attention span!

Rules of Self Nomination:

These are rules, not guidelines. Blogging guidelines (as in, suggestions) will be provided to the selected priorfatgirl. To self-nominate:

You must be a mom: As much as I consider myself a mom {Iggy is my love}, I’m pretty sure real human kids are different. To nominate yourself, you must have a child (or multiple) 18 yrs old or younger living at home. The rest {your work schedule, marital status, living situation} I’ll leave up to you.

You must have an active blog: Don’t roll your eyes – blogging is tough. Fighting through your healthiness life is tougher. Doing them together, at the same time is redonkulously hard.  An active blog, for self-nomination purposes, means more than 1x per week. Your blog does not have to be health focused – it is more so to show that you know what you are getting yourself into. {Your personal blog will not be shared in first round and only will be shared after your approval.}

You must not rely on quick fix diets, pills or any other fad idea: You know the drill. Being healthy is forever. Eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast and lunch is not. Nor is some crazy infomercial idea. To nominate yourself, you agree to fight through not only the physical barriers of being healthy, but the mental without the help of a quick fix. You also agree that you will fight to figure out what healthy means to you. If something doesn’t work, try, try again.

You are willing to fight…publicly: Your personal life will still be your personal life – you can set your own boundaries on what you share but being a part of the PriorFatGirl family means allowing yourself to be vulnerable to growth. There IS a way to share that you are dealing with external stresses and how it effects your healthiness journey without airing your dirty laundry.

Additional terms: Priorfatgirl does not edit or scrutinize posts. A blog is personal journal for individual use. That said, the PriorFatGirl brand and what it stands for should be held in high regard. Additional guidelines will be provided during each additional stage of the process.

Self-Nomination Review:

During this process, Jen, a priorfatgirl, will review applications and select which applications move onto the 2nd round. Applications will be reviewed on multiple criteria which includes but is not limited to:

Trueness to yourself: I’m looking for someone who can be honest with themselves. Someone who can look herself in the mirror and acknowledge they are the only one who can do this…and then go do it. It is easy to talk the talk but a priorfatgirl is someone who can walk the walk.

Writing/Communication Style: While each priorfatgirl should have their own individual writing style, it is important that they can genuinely articulate their experience. Grammar and spelling does not have to be perfect but it should be fluid and interesting to the reader. This means being able to convey humor, sadness, frustration, excitement and anything else that helps the general flow of story.

Appreciate where you’ve been, where you are and where you are going: Everyone starts somewhere. This is not about finding someone who has the most weight to lose — this is so much more than that. This is about someone who can truly appreciate their own healthiness journey for what it truly is – a learning process. This is about someone who can truly appreciate each step of the learning process and can embrace life lessons.

Anything else I feel appropriate: There is no “mold” a priorfatgirl will fit. Because this is such an individual journey, applications will be selected on a variety of other selection criteria including their previous blogging journey and fight among others.

PriorFatGirl Reader Voting:

The week of April 11th, the selected self-nominations will be shared — it will be up to the PriorFatGirl readers to select who will become the next PriorFatGirl, mom edition! Additional voting instructions will be announced at that time. This is not a popularity contest — this is life. Begging for votes is not encouraged.

So, what are you waiting for? This is open to all bloggin’ moms, in ANY country. Let the self-nominations begin!

I know I’m in the minority but I gave a big thumbs down when Fit Bottomed Girls added all the baby-centric content and now you too??? What is with the mommy-centric mentality these days??

Reply

Heather B March 11, 2011 at 10:33 am

Is it possible to do a filtered RSS feed for those people who don’t want to read about baby/mama stuff? Personally, I don’t care one way or the other, but it might be worth looking into just in case.

Reply

Jen, a priorfatgirl March 11, 2011 at 10:35 am

Correct Heather! There is always the option to follow only certain people, depending on who you connect most with.

Reply

Jen, a priorfatgirl March 11, 2011 at 10:34 am

Thanks for asking — I cannot respond about Fit Bottomed Girls however it is my opinion that mom’s experience a struggle unlike what I’ve faced therefore it may be hard for some people to relate to me and my journey. History tells us that most moms struggle with a balancing act including household duties, possible outside the home work, raising children, running to/from school and other children related activities and all the time trying to remain social and happy which may leave little time for themselves.

The main landing page of PriorFatGirl.com will remain as is with my journey documented – a separate page will be added similar to what we did with Elle, Lindsay, Amanda and JP.

Jenna Z March 11, 2011 at 10:46 am

Awesome, I’m glad that it will remain separate!

Thanks Jen. I too really look forward to another perspective (a Mom’s perspective) on this journey so many of us are on.

I work full time out of the home and my husband and I have two small children. My main motivation on my journey to better health is being here for my children and setting a good example for them. I struggle with feeling good about “taking the time” to exercise and look forward to learning how others plan their weeks. I also look forward to family friendly meal ideas.

Just like there are different types of people, there are different ways to achieve health goals and you may be surprised what you could learn from them!

Terri K. March 11, 2011 at 3:04 pm

I think it’s really interesting that you feel that way. The one thing I can say is that the content on my personal blog is generally about me (even though I do have a toddler). My journey had to be about me, or I wasn’t going to be able to get anything accomplished. Basically, I talk about my own personal struggles, just like the struggles that anyone else has. I don’t want you to miss out on valuable info that someone could bring to you simply because they have a child.

Becky March 11, 2011 at 10:33 am

Question- Do the kids have to live at home full time? I’m a divorced mom and it’s a tough battle as well. I know how hard it was when the kids lived with me full time, but what I didn’t realize was how hard it would be when they weren’t here.

Reply

Jen, a priorfatgirl March 11, 2011 at 10:45 am

Good question — full time at home is not required however there must be some sort of regular and consistent involvement with your children (as in shared custody, etc).

What an amazing journey you’ve had! You are a HUGE inspiration already!

The contest is geared towards finding a future PriorFatGirl, someone who is towards the beginning of their healthiness journey so that readers can connect with someone at a similar point in their journey. That said, you and I both know that just because we are close to (or at) a healthy weight doesn’t mean we’ve figured it out so keep fighting the fight — you are amazing!

Shrinking mommy of 2 March 11, 2011 at 3:19 pm

thanks! That is what I figured and no way do I have it all “figured” out. It is a constant struggle!

Reply

Jen Hendrickson March 11, 2011 at 3:35 pm

So, Shrinking, I am curious, will you still throw your blogging hat in the ring? I am in similar situation as you – I am very close to my goal – but I am thinking that my real journey is just beginning at this stage (maintaining, setting example for my girls, etc). I know I am far from “complete”! Just curious to what you were thinking – I look forward to reading your blog either way! Thanks!

No, Jen said she wanted ones that just started, etc. I will respect that. I will just continue with my blog and if anyone wants to check it out…go for it! I enjoy reading this blog and get inspiration from other bloggers as well!

Oh bummer! Haha…after losing 85 pounds, I, too, am close to my goal, but am now dealing with the after effects of pregnancy weight, eating right and exercising with an 8 month old baby, etc. I totally get why you would want a PriorFatGirl Mom at the start of their journey, though. It makes sense in terms of relating to what they are going through. Just a thought…maybe you could do a highlight post showcasing some mommies that have reached/are close to their goal but still deal with the everyday struggle of maintaining a healthy lifestyle? I know for myself, my journey just got a lot more serious and important now that I am a role model and example for my daughter. Helping her to view food in a healthy way and not wanting her to pick up my bad habits has become top priority for me…so in that sense, my story just got even more complicated! Probably something a lot of readers could relate to as well…keep up the great work. Whoever you choose will surely be as inspirational as you have been to so many.

Last time you had a call for nominations I just plain wasn’t ready for it. My mom’s illness and death were still too close, and I needed time to get my life organized. That being said, it’s officially time. I’ve been at this blogging thing for a year, and have gained and lost weight – struggling along with life’s ups and downs, but am on the healthiness track that I am finally feeling comfortable and confident about.

Thanks for this chance, Jen!

I think as long as PFG Mom HAS posts from the beginning, that she should be able to compete. I almost never find a blogger until they are “successful” – to at least some extent. I think it inspires people. Sort of – light at the end of the tunnel. Certainly, healthiness does not stop when you reach your goal and I relate to the idea that you want a “success” story and “advice” about balancing the demands of motherhood with weight loss.

Reply

katy March 11, 2011 at 3:01 pm

woohoo, great idea. as a mama trying to lose, i will certainly follow the posts of whoever wins!
it is a different struggle at times, but we can both learn from each other. this is a great addition to this blog.

James, a priorfatguy March 11, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Katy I wish you were a blogger, because you’d be perfect. I guess I’ll just settle for real life emails.

I first read this on JP’s post…

If I wasn’t already 70 lbs in to my journey to health, I’d nominate myself (and I started my blog last July when I was 278 lbs).

If you decide Moms who are farther along in their journey can join – let me know since I have been blogging at http://fat-angry-blog.blogspot.com since I committed to getting healthier.

I am mother to 6 children ages 15-2 and living a weight loss journey with a 130 pound loss over 2 years. I find it disappointing you are not looking for people who are well on their way to success. I personally am drawn into new blogs when I see that they are successfully winning the battle of the bulge.
For me I had every Mom excuse in the world times SIX on why I didn’t have the time, money or energy to get control of my health until the day my mother had an accident and I almost lost her. Everything in my life changed that day and it was just the wake up call I needed to take my own health serious. I hope you reconsider that requirement because I think you are missing out of some inspiring Mothers.

Well darn! I was just going to start blogging about my experience…but I am down 95 pounds from where I started and I just entered the “normal” BMI category. I guess that DQs me? Man, I would love to get out there to inspire some people.

One of the greatest rewards that my journey has afforded me is that people around me have also started working on their own health issues. It is a wonderful feeling to know that one has inspired another person!

As a sidenote, I started my journey because my daughter and I almost died in childbirth. We almost didn’t make it. I was a large girl to begin with, but I ate myself into a stupor over the year that followed her birth. And as she started to grow and develope, I realized that I didn’t want to sentence her to a life of poor health and stagnation. We made it through our brush with death for a reason…and now we had a chance to LIVE. Now or never, baby!

Anyway, to all the moms out there that have survived preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and other birth traumas – you can do this! Embrace your second chance…embrace your child…embrace YOU!

I am just starting my weight loss journey and have read your blog for years though I don’t have a blog of my own. Is it too late to start one to qualify on self nominating? I was going to any way but was a little over-whelmed to take the plunge. This is a great reason to start!

I’d love to be in this, but I’ve never had the courage to actually commit to a blog. I have lots to say. I think I’m on the right track finally. If I start my blog, and commit….would you like to hear my story?
I’m a very late bloomer….single mom…90 lbs to go….I’ll follow anyway
I aspire to greatness like my idol Mizfit!

I am so thrilled to hear that you’ll be welcoming a mom to the fold! Until I had my little guy 2 years ago, I just didn’t get why it was so different to deal with weight loss and body issues post-baby. I love the blogs I read, but they tend to be written by twenty-somethings with no children… so even the amazing ones (like yours!) can’t really plug into the mom perspective or even conceive of why it would make such a difference. I have to say that you continue to amaze me, PFG. You have such an incredible ability to conceive of issues other than your own. That is a true gift. Most of us walk around with tunnel vision– you see the big picture even when it doesn’t directly affect you. Seriously, that is a rare trait. Thank you!
