Quickie

“Many people dream of success. To me, success can only be achieved through repeated failure and introspection.” ~ Soichiro Honda

Hi friends!  This is going to be a super quick post – I’m home from work sick today.  Although, I’m feeling A LOT better than I was this morning.

Anyways, sorry for no post on Friday.  Work was meeting after meeting.  I just didn’t get here.  Sorry!

I did weigh in on Friday.  I was up 0.2.  Big deal.  And really, after all the scale issues I’m having, I don’t trust anything that stupid thing says.  It takes FOREVER for a number to register on the scale that once if finally does register, I don’t even attempt to get a second reading to be sure it’s accurate.  I CANNOT wait until my new scale gets here.  It will be nice to just be able to jump on, record the number, be done with it.

Lately, I get so frustrated while weighing in because I have to step on that thing about a billion and a half times just to get a number to register.  ANNOYING.  Hurry up, new scale!  :)

On the workout front, things have been going really well.  I’ve been doing The 30 Day Shred about every other day.  On the off days from the Shred, I try to get in some sort ot activity.  Dexter has been enjoying A LOT of walks lately.  :)

We went for a walk earlier today… a pretty brisk walk.  We walked for 25 minutes and my HRM told me I burned 220.  WOOT!  :)   Still really loving my HRM and being able to see what I’m really burning.

All in all, things for me are going really well.  I feel like I look like I’ve lost weight… which is pretty exciting.  :)   Who knows if I REALLY have since I have the most untrustworthy scale EVER- but I feel good… and that’s what counts.

Okay.. I’m going to go cuddle with Dexter and watch boring daytime tv.  :)   Have a fabulous day!  :)

Is healthy not cool?

by Jen, a priorfatgirl on September 27, 2010

Hello friends! What another great weekend that went too fast. Friday night, I met some friends for dinner at Big Bowl. I had the hot & sour soup which was delish, per usual.

Beautiful bloggers: Molly, Cindy, Erin, Me (top row), Samantha, Alexa & Sarina (front row)

Saturday morning was a morning long awaited for. Once a year, my sisters (and used to be mom too), all get together for spa day. We do this instead of exchanging birthday presents – no kids, no boys included. Quite relaxing and I’m pretty sure everyone looks forward to it.

We started out at 7:30am for breakfast at Perkins. To be honest, I was nervous because from what I could remember of the menu, it would be page after page of temptation however I was quite surprised to find that Perkins has a few healthier options now on their menu and include calories for them!

A healthier version of eggs benedict from Perkins!

My support & comfort {sisters}: Heidi, Alicia & Melinda

We got a deal from Living Social for $99 and it included a 30 minute massage, 60 minute facial, pedicure, manicure and a hair wash/blow-out. This year, my sisters decided to treat me to the package in recognition of the Shape Article — THANK YOU HEIDI, MELINDA & ALICIA!

Foot mask = ready for running!

As I was getting my pedicure, I flipped through multiple magazines – this caught my eye:

Is healthy not cool anymore?

I just could not get over how sick the women in the ad looked. Their legs were so skinny, their faces were so… so… skeleton looking. I didn’t even realize it was for cut-off jeans article until I just now posted the picture. THOUGHTS?

After we finished up, I came home and was so relaxed, I took a 30 minute nap. I woke up just in time for dinner {come on, it is rare for me to sleep through a meal!}. Since Carlos was going to play poker that night, we decided for an early dinner at Marlas Caribbean Cusine.

YUM YUM YUM YUM

Caribbean beef patty

Amazing & creamiest hummus w/ pita bread.

Dinner: Paratha {a soft flaky flatbread made with butter and served with choice of filling.} My choice, chicken.

It was almost like a sweet yet savory chicken stew on the inside.

But, after eating appetizers, I ended up taking most of my dinner home with me.

Sunday, I got up and met my friend Meghan for our last long run before the 10 mile race. Our intent was to go run the last 4 miles of the actual race because we heard there was a HUGE hill and for a lot of people, they got intimidated by the hill and didn’t do as well on the race. We parked at mile 6 and started running towards the State Capital, where the end of the race was. We kept looking for the hill yet……. we never found it. We got to the State Capital and were convinced we must have not looked at the route correctly – we thought we missed the hill. So, we turned around and ran the 4 miles back to the car. When we got back from our 8 mile run, Meghan called her dad who chuckled at us — apparently the last section of the race is slightly uphill the entire way which makes it hard for the marathoners, because their last section of the race is tough. But Meghan and I were anticipating a wall of a hill and were oddly disappointed that we weren’t going to have to master the hill in our minds!

After running, Carlos and I went out for breakfast at the Uptowner in St. Paul – by the time we got home, it was 2:30pm which left just enough time in the day for me to shower and do my Cinderella duties {grocery shop, vacuum, sweep, clean bathrooms, fold laundry and make dinner}.

By 9pm, I was so drained, I collapsed in bed and immediately fell asleep. I woke up this morning smiling and energized – ah, I love sleep like that!

Alright, better get to work.

The week before.

by Jen, a priorfatgirl on September 25, 2010

On October 3rd, I will participate in my first ever 10 mile run. Not a 10K but 10  miles. And here I am, one week before… reflecting on the past couple of months worth of training. Only one word comes to mind:

SPEECHLESS

I remember running my first 5K and telling myself I never wanted to run any longer than 30 minutes. Ha, I still tell myself this. I remember telling others around me I was not a runner and had no intention on ever running again.

Funny how by taking things one small step at a time, you all of a sudden find yourself further than you ever imagined you could possibly be.

Funny how by just putting your head down and doing it, you find yourself accomplishing the impossible.

Funny how when you put your mind to something, you can do what you dream of.

A friend on Twitter asked me earlier today about my journey:

@EmilyKasik:   @priorfatgirl would u be willing to do a blog talking about your success and failure with running and getting to the point you r now?
@EmilyKasik:    @priorfatgirl u do talk about running a lot but I must have missed out on all your early blogs on ur start. trying to keep myself motivated

It wasn’t until Emily asked {all in on question} that I stopped to really think about this whole journey as a chunk of time in my life. To be honest, I was just keeping my head down and pushing through. Which is probably a good thing but I never stopped to think much about what I was truly doing, I was just doing it.

The Tough:

Over the past couple of months, I’ve had moments when all I’ve wanted to do is give up. Runs that I struggled just to get my shoes on, let alone actually run. Or runs where I had to settle for less.

The learning:

Yes, there have been tough runs, but I have learned so much about myself. Running has taught me what the physical effect of running have on a body. I’ve learned that I am completely capable of running in the rain. I also learned that working out really does relieve stress.

The best:

But the best thing about running? Is doing something I never in my life thought I could ever accomplish.

I AM A RUNNER.

What a beautiful experience, to look back and realize that I’ve done something I used to think was impossible — and all because I just put my head down and took in one step, one breath at a time.
