The Day My Life Changed...

I started on my journey in August of 2007. For two years I fought, kicked and cried my way through losing 90+lbs. I was well on my way to hitting an official 100lbs lost by August 1st, 2009 which was my 2 year anniversary. I was planning a big 'ol celebration around here... until my life changed the evening before my final weigh-in. (Click here for more info).

Join me now, as I reevaluate my priorities, struggle to find out what "healthy" is while dealing with an emotional trauma, and continue to learn how to live a healthy life, no sugar coating included.

Craving McDonalds

Uh. I'm a priorfatgirl. I just have to keep repeating this to myself.

I wish I could say that after 2+ years and 100lbs lost it gets easier but I gotta be honest, the last 3 days all I can think about is McDonald's. I have not caved - not because I forbid it, but because I know I really don't want it. I know if I eat it, it won't be as good as I'm making it sound in my head. I know I just gotta get past this craving.

You know what's changed though? 2+ years ago, I would have not made it 3 days of "wanting" McDonald's. I would have eating it 3 days ago. I wanted it, I ate it. Now? I've come too far to give in to a silly craving.

  • Sure it would be easy to just swing by and get a happy meal.
  • Sure we should be able to have everything in moderation.
  • Sure we should not deny ourselves certain foods.

But here this - we each have the power to make our own decisions. I have made the decision to not cave in on this silly little McDonald's desire. It's been 3 days - I am stronger then my cravings.

Tell me - what do you do to get rid
of a craving that has lingered
around for THREE DAYS!

Lost wallet
Enough said. I lost it. Gone. It had no cash in it but can't believe its lost! I last saw it Wednesday afternoon in my purse under my desk. I noticed it was not in my purse Wednesday at dinner so a very short time frame. I sit pretty far off the beaten path - no one every really walks past my desk.

I have retraced and retraced and RETRACED my steps. Looked in my car 3 times AND had Carlos look too. I've called the restaurant, asked company security & housekeeping, searched high & low, even asked Iggy if he knew where it was.

The worst part? It was a Christmas give from Carlos last year - a beautiful black Prada clutch type wallet.

I don't even know what to do, where to start. Boo hoo, boo hoo, boo hoo!

I'm glad you haven't given into your craving. Because it truly doesn't taste that good and you won't feel any better after you eat it.

Just make your own version at home, I think that could help! Some baked sweet potato fries, a hamburger (or veggie burger), a bun, tomato, lettuce, some sort of sauce... Much better. :)

So sorry to hear you lost your wallet. That has gotta suck. :|

As I said about your will power over the halloween candy - give some to me!!!! Please Jen. ;)

Way to go on showing your craving who's boss!

If I have a craving for a few days, usually I wait until Friday to see if I'm still craving (that is, IF this craving has popped up at least a few days before Friday... if it comes on like, a Thursday night or something - I make sure to wait at least a few days to see if I REALLY want it)

I wait until Friday because that's when I weigh in - so usually on Friday's at lunch, I'll fill a craving if I REALLY want it - otherwise, I just ignore that little thought until it goes away... if it doesn't go away, I'll allow myself to have it.

May not be the best method, but it works for me.. for now! It's an ever-changing process. What works now, may not work in the months to come... just taking this one day at a time.. aren't we all? :)

You don't want McDonalds...did you know they put enough preservatives it it...that it will last YEARS without actually molding or deteriorating...if you just leave it on the counter. :o)

I have an idea: Food INC just came out on DVD. Go rent that, you'll never want McDonalds (or any beef) again for that matter.

Problem solved.

I hear you on how hard it is..I am 22 months in 98lbs off and I still struggle every day!!

Honestly after a 3 day craving I would give in and get something from mcd's. There is no point in depriving yourself. You can do a happy mean with minimal damage.

Good luck finding your wallet - I always panic when I think about losing somethingl ike that.

I have these random cravings quite a bit. One of my most common cravings is Burger King. I don't even eat meat anymore, but I still crave Whopper Jr's. lol.

When I have these ridiculous cravings, I generally do the same thing as you've done. I wait a few days, and if the craving is still there, I answer it-with a healthy option. I make my own healthy fries, or buy Alexia Foods yummy fries (http://www.alexiafoods.com/) and have some of them with a veggie burger on a whole grain roll.

Like Diana mentioned above, I load the burger up with all of the yumminess I want...lettuce, tomato, onion, hot peppers. Anything to make my mouth happy.

Believe it or not, even though it's not Burger King, my brain is satisfied with it.

losing your wallet is the worst. I got my stolen out of my shopping cart while picking out produce. it had a corporate credit card and 500.00 cash in it :(

abt. the craving..either go and let yourself have some or get to the root of it.

Good for you for not giving into the craving! McD's will probably just make your tummy sick at this point!

I have found that if you make a hot ham and cheese sandwich with some mustard and onions on it, it tastes a lot like a McD's cheeseburger! It's the mustard, onion and salt combo that works together. Give it a try! :)

I hope you find your wallet! I know how frustrating that is.

I absolutely love the workout photos. Now I want to do that. Would definitely motivate me to work out. Hmmmmmm. You are brilliant. :-)

Way to go on fighting that craving!!

I struggle w/ cravings too (my latest is taco bell...yuck). I don't really have any suggestions. I've tried the make-a-healthy-version-at-home, and it really didn't work for me. But if I fight if off long enough, it will pass.

And it's great that you know it won't taste as good as you think. That's something I never think about when I'm craving...but it's so true.

I don't know how to kick cravings in general, but to kick the McDonald's craving, watch "Super Size Me". That oughta work :)

McDonald's is the anti-christ! I'll be taking my son and his friend there this evening though... what does that say about me? Seriously though, good for you for not giving in to your craving. I'll remember that when I go there tonight. I was going to suggest what Diana suggested, making your own burger and fries at home. We do that a lot, I love me a bison burger!

I'll send you a sweaty picture of myself soon. I love it! I've lost 74 pounds since January and I'm on the track to losing 100, you've been helpful during these last 26 pounds. Thanks!

How sad is it that your post has now made me crave McDonalds? I know it's rubbish, but I love it. Hopefully I won't have to go through 3 days of craving though. Way to stay strong!

If a craving has been going on for 3 days, I would have that item. If I really get the taste for something and try to substitute for it, I will consume way more calories than if I ate the darn thing I was craving in the first place!

I'm just gonna be honest with you here: If I've craved something for THREE days, I go and get it, as long as it's not too crazy, like a ten-gallon vat of ice cream or something. I especially go and get it if I haven't had it for awhile.

I was actually craving McDonalds earlier this week pretty badly, and I went and got some. Yes, made me sick, but the craving is gone. I know, I'm not much help here, but I figure, cravings are going to pop up in life, because, that's life, and if I'm craving something THAT badly, I'm going to have it. I don't consider any foods off-limits, because that's when I crave them more. But, I do only indulge in moderation, of course, otherwise I would've gain 90 lbs. back. Good luck with it!

honestly, i have given in to those cravings in the last couple of days. i have no idea where they came from or what to do about it- so i went with it, and ordered something from wendys off the dollar menu. i guess a dollar and a couple hundred calories isnt TOO bad. but how about making some "fast food" at home? or going to a cafe that serves healthy stuff? maybe if you eat a veggie sandwich with sweet potato fries it will help to curb the craving..

im working on wondering where the hell my instense craving for dunkin donuts came from. from my right hip or left one? lol

Blech, cravings, or "the wants" as I call them have got to be my #1 enemy for losing weight.

I make myself look up the calorie content for whatever I want & the figure out what I would have to do to burn it off. Sometimes it works or sometimes I am able to find something that is less of a diet killer that will settle 'the wants' from the menu.

Best wishes & thanks for mentioning my giveaway!

Well, I've been reading your blog for a while. I lived in Minnesota many years ago (uh, like 15) and love reading your posts about the Minnesota State Fair and local attractions. I loved my time there, and miss the place. I'm coming back this weekend (long overdue) to visit a friend, and I've been 'craving' The Good Earth! I don't know if it's possible to crave something you've never had...but it just looks so good, healthy and wholesome in your pics :-) ...and it just fits with how I remember my life in MN. I'm really looking forward to the trip. So funny that everyone in Maryland is like "but it's so cold there"...and I'm all..."but people DON'T hibernate in Winter there...it's just another season." I'm a WW too, working to get back to that 'fit' place in my life and this weekend's trip will just be added motivation.

See. I am not where need to be. I gave in and drove through and purchased a happy meal the other day. For some strange reason I was craving Mcdonald's and that's what I had to have! It's like my brain shuts off and I ignore all the progress I have made thus far!!! I am a work in progress.

Hooray for not giving into McD! I almost swung by there this morning as I was running late, but said to myself "you can put a healthy breakfast together in 5 minutes - do it!"

I feel your pain - I lost my wallet three weeks ago - no cash, but my license, debit card AND $125 IN UNUSED GIFT CARDS!

I remembered having it on a Sunday when I went grocery shopping - I don't normally spend money during the week and didn't know it was missing until that Wednesday!

I closed my debit card, and had to get a new license - the only good news is that my license was going to expire next March so I got to renew it at the same time.

Hope it turns up though! I keep thinking mine will!

I try to wait a craving out, but if it goes on for more than a few days, I usually give in to it so I can get it off of my mind. And usually, it isn't as good as it was in my mind...and sometimes I don't finish it because of that.

Sorry about losing your wallet - that is so frustrating!

I've been craving McDonalds, too! Someone in my office had some for lunch a few days ago, and ever since smelling those fries, I can't stop thinking about the golden arches! Ah! Glad we both have refrained. :) I was going to suggest what Diana did...making your own healthy version at home might disspell the cravings a bit. I'm going to take that advice as well with the ground turkey I have in the fridge! :)

So sorry about your wallet! I hope it turns up.

TJ said...

Yep, just because we have come so far on our journeys does not mean that those cravings disappear! Here is what is hard for me....on a windy day I can smell McDonlalds blowing my direction. Yes, it is THAT close. lol

So what do I do? I fake it! I make whatever it is that I am craving at home. I know that I can not be trusted at any fast food place. That is where the bingeing was the worst my whole life.

Hope someone turns in your wallet! I would like to think that there are still honest people in this world. :)

Back when I was actually thin and maintaining it, I had a 4-day rule. If I was still thinking about it after 4 days, I ate it. Whatever "it" was, and the only rule was that I either had to order a SMALL size, or just one item. So I could have a happy meal with the fries and all, OR I could order a Big Mac, no fries, no soda. It worked for a long time. (Well. Until I started applying it to food in GENERAL, and kicked off an eating disorder. But it was a good tactic for limiting junk food.)

Alternatively, you know those McRib sandwiches they have every once in a while? I swear the Morningstar Farms veggie riblets taste EXACTLY the same. Same sauce, same consistency, everything. So if a McRib would satisfy your craving, you could try the veggie version.

Way to talk yourself down from the ledge about the Mickey D's. You're absolutely right; there's no way it would be as good as you're building it up in your head. Actually, it would more than likely twist your innards outta shape. Sorry about the wallet; mine got lifted during a workout a couple of months ago and I'm still trying to replace cards...

Last Valentine's Day I left my beautiful cashmere coach scarf (that was the first christmas gift I had gotten from my boyfriend) at the restaurant we had dinner at. We were the last people there and I went back to pick it up and they couldn't find it anywhere. I know one of the employees took it and it makes me so sad still:(

Oh no Jen! That is awful about your wallet. I for one am a returner, as is my husband. We have tracked down the owners of all the wallets and cell phones we have found on our runs/walks. It is the only thing to do. I hope someone contacts you asap. Come on people, tis the holiday season! Time for good deeds if you don't do them year round.

Great job not giving into your craving! That takes some willpower! I've been having major cravings for a DQ cookies n cream blizzard. Luckily there are no Dairy Queens around here. I usually just try to make a healthier version of whatever I am dying to eat. I know..pretty hard with something like McDonald's!

Ahh hope you find your wallet. That is the worst feeling ever!

I had a McD's craving a while back (actually it was a long time ago) and blogged about it too. It was a visual thing for me. The McDs I drive by on my way to work every day had a special on Double Cheeseburgers or something like that. For some reason that was a trigger for me and I wanted it, even though I don't really like that kind of burger anyway.

They finally changed the sign and the craving went away.

Try making your own homemade healthy version of what you are wanting. Sometimes that helps. Or have a friend go with you, buy it, take one bite, then throw it away. The friend is there to throw it away for you in case you can't.

Hope you find your wallet. :( That sucks!

MoraPiggy said...

When I have a craving, I just do whatever I can to ignore it. Drink water, occupy my hands, try to make a low-fat version of the craving. But I find the only real cure is time. Just wait it out, which could take a week or more.

Sucky news about your wallet. I hope you find it.

I say everything in moderation. The exception to that rule? Fast food. I gave it up Jan 2006 and I don't regret it one bit. If I want a burger, I hit the burger joint that makes each patty fresh. If I want a taco, I go to a place that uses real meat. I figure if you're going to splurge, at least splurge on real food. :)

Sorry about your wallet. :( Maybe it will turn up? I've lost a purse/wallet a few times and the part I hate the worst is dealing with getting a new ID. Such a pain!!!

Hiya. Just popping in to say that I use EFT (emotional freedom technique) on my really tough cravings. I am a recovering binge eater and tend to get easily obsessed about the food I'm craving. I used EFT on a really bad cookie craving (Mrs. Field's cookies in particular) in May this year and haven't even had the urge to look at a cookie since. I've used it on chocolate, too, and I rarely eat that these days.

Maybe it can help you?

kimert said...

Good for you for not giving in! I have to admit that I have will power but not like that! If I've craved something that long the fat girl inside me (or that I still feel I am some days) gets the best of me. :(
I hope you find your wallet!!!
Have a great weekend!

Thanks so much for putting up my picture. If I crave chocolate I can usually eat a choc pudding or have a little to satisfy my craving. The only thing I won't allow myself to have is soda-gave it up 4 years ago, I could never have it in moderation, I could practically bath in it.

I love a big mac, just one of my many vices. And I've seen (and read) Fast Food Nation, didn't help. Back when I was still in my freak mode I wouldn't have touched any fastfood (it helps to check the nutrition pages for McDonalds) but now I consider it a personal treat. It happens rarely so I'm not going to beat myself up over it, considering fastfood used to be eaten 3 to 4 times a week. However I rarely touch a pastry because that would be a trigger food for me. You know yourself, whichever way you decide will be fine, really.

Next time you crave McDonald's just think about Food, Inc. That should do it.
